3 Weeks

Appearance:
She's starting to fill out a bit in her fingers and her cheeks.

Physical:
She's become squirmier, kicking her legs when feeding. She can almost keep the pacifier in her mouth, if we prop her hands in a certain way to hold it toward her face. She seems to have improved neck strength, but still doesn't like tummy time.

Sleeping:
She sleeps 4+ hours once or twice per night, if left to her own accord (which this mommy permits, guiltily). She doesn't sleep as well in the daytime, just nodding off during and after feedings. She's now sleeping in her own little "bed," beside my side of the bed.

Eating:
She feeds about 10 times per day, most frequently during the late afternoon and evening. She hasn't been pooping the recommended 3-4 quarter-sized dumps each day, although she has plenty of wet diapers. I started to get worried about her feeding, and put in a call to Kaiser but have yet to hear back. I just want to make sure she continues to gain weight, as we don't have our next doctor appointment until May. In reading about breastfeeding, I've decided to be more vigilant about letting her empty a breast, encouraging her intake of the fattier milk, before offering the other breast. Also, I'm practicing letting her pull herself off the nipple, instead of deciding for her that she's suckling and not eating. We will see if that seems to make a difference ... As a matter of fact, I believe she might have just shat while sitting in my lap, as we speak. It sounded like a wet, squidgy fart.

Temperament:
She's been fussier the last few days, although I suspect this is due to not having pooped. She doesn't really like to be put down, unless she is actually out. If she's being held and paid attention to, she generally is in good spirits, a relaxed baby. She really likes to be swaddled, and is pacified by the Soother, but usually only when someone holds it in her mouth. She also quiets when I run the vacuum, when riding in the car, or when being walked either in the stroller or the carrier. If she's already out for the count, she'll tolerate the vibrating chair or the swing, but generally doesn't respond well to these devices.

  1. She is so cute. Keep the pictures coming! : ) And if it makes you feel any less guilty: I've never woken Nora up to feed her and she clearly has not suffered for it. I didn't feel like I really had any "mothering instincts" except that one: waking a sleeping baby at night just felt wrong (for me and for her). Keep up the good work, mama!
